Weather forecast: Partly sunny skies with rain chances

Comments Off on Weather forecast: Partly sunny skies with rain chances

Here’s what you need to know about the Bay area weather for Monday:

  • Some marine showers, storms in the Gulf
  • Monday morning muggy, light winds
  • Highest chances of rain shift inland in afternoon

There will be partly sunny skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms today.

We have light winds this morning then a sea breeze will develop along both the west and east coasts. The chance of scattered showers and storms begins at our coast then moves east across the Tampa Bay area.

This will cause the highest chances of showers and thunderstorms to shift inland over the interior counties through the afternoon. Some of the storms could be strong and produce locally heavy rain.

The chance of rain is 40 percent.

High temperatures will be in the low 90s this afternoon.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with isolated showers and thunderstorms. Low temperatures will be in the upper 70s in Tampa Bay and the low 70s in our northern counties.

An area of high pressure across the central Florida peninsula moves slowly south tonight and Tuesday while a front stalls across the Southeast U.S.

Tuesday and Wednesday, the winds will shift to a more defined onshore west to southwest wind. This will allow for the rain and storm chances to start early at the coast.

Then the showers and storms will shift more inland and eastward as the sea breeze pushes farther inland.

With westerly winds, daytime highs will be in the upper 80s at the coast to the low 90s inland, while overnight lows will remain in the mid 70s to 80 degrees.

Weather forecast: Some showers overnight into Monday

Comments Off on Weather forecast: Some showers overnight into Monday

Here’s what you need to know about the Bay area weather heading into Monday:

  • Some marine showers, storms in the Gulf
  • Monday morning muggy, light winds
  • Highest chances of rain shift inland in afternoon

Monday morning will be a typically humid and muggy one with lows in the mid 70s north to around 80 near the coast. Through the early morning there may be some marine showers and storms in the Gulf. A few showers will be possible developing onshore by daybreak.

Throughout Monday the winds will stay light, which will allow for a sea breeze to develop along both the west and east coast. But with a slight westerly flow, the west coast sea breeze will shift inland a bit faster. This will cause the highest chances of showers and storms to shift inland over the interior counties toward afternoon, where the boundaries converge.

Tuesday and Wednesday, the winds will shift to a more defined onshore west-southwest flow. This will allow for the rain and storm chances to start early at the coast.

Then, the showers and storms will shift more inland and eastward as the sea breeze pushes farther inland. This pattern will remain unchanged through the end of the week and into the weekend.

No temperature changes are expected, even with a weak front moving in just to our north. With westerly winds, daytime highs will be in the upper 80s near the coast to low 90s inland, while overnight lows will remain in the mid to upper 70s.

Foodie: The Noodle Craze

Comments Off on Foodie: The Noodle Craze

Ichicoro Ramen with plum cocktail

Ichicoro Ramen

By Ronda M. Parag

We all remember the ramen noodles that we ate in college for about 25 cents a pack; those noodles offered a great value and filled the hungry belly of students everywhere; but times have changed, and now Ramen and Noodle bars have become so popular and trendy, that Noel Cruz and his team decided the time was right to open Ichicoro Ramen in Seminole Heights almost six months ago. “We had an entire team of six relocate from New York,” said Cruz. “Seminole Heights felt to be the right vibe. I’m friends with other restauranteurs in the area, the neighborhood is good and I felt like it would be accepted.”

True Ramen is a labor of love with  creating the broth that can take up to 20 hours to complete. “With the exception of the noodles, everything is made onsite and from scratch,” said Cruz. “Our noodles are a custom recipe made by Sun Noodle, and we source as much locally as possible and that is indigenous to the area.”

“Ramen is identifiable to nearly everyone,” said Cruz. “It’s been a learning curve for the broth and accompaniments. Noodles are number one, but the broth is of equal importance. Everything else enhances the dish.” The menu offers about five broths on the lunch and dinner menus. The best seller is the Champon Ramen that is pork/chicken broth, grilled gulf shrimp, chasyu asado (braised pork), ginger tempura, scallion, corn, shiitake, and sesame. The Shoyu Ramen is also popular with a chicken broth, chasuya asado (braised pork), ajitama (seasoned egg), menma (bamboo shoots), scallion, and nori. The open concept kitchen allows diners to view the activity in the kitchen with a full team of five people on the line. “We have a grill that allows us to add a smokey element to the pork and we char-grill the vegetables,” said Cruz.

Lunch offers Rice Bowls and Snacks in the bar from 4 – 5 pm. For dinner, the Pork Steam Bun and the Smoked Brisket Steam Bun are perfect to share as each are served with 2 buns. “Right now, Ichicoro is the only one pushing the diversity in Ramen,” said Cruz. “We are trying to get more focused and just have fun.”

The interior of the restaurant is sophisticated, yet casual with a lot of design elements. The bar offers a perfect perch to grab a drink while waiting for a table. “We did put a lot of thought into the bar menu,” said Cruz. “It’s small, but mighty.”

No reservations accepted, but by using the DineTime app, diners can hold a spot in line and receive a text message when a table is ready.    M

Attendees at Asian bank meeting cite value of cooperation

Comments Off on Attendees at Asian bank meeting cite value of cooperation

(AP) South Korea’s deputy prime minister has called on governments to show the value of international cooperation as a Chinese-led Asian infrastructure investment bank held its first annual meeting following Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.

Officials of dozens of governments including Britain attended the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank meeting Saturday. The bank was launched this year to finance construction of roads, ports and other infrastructure in Asian countries.

Speaking at an opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Yoo Il-ho of South Korea said the British vote was “a big blow to those who believe a more integrated world economy is beneficial.”

Yoo said, “We should use this opportunity to show that we can cooperate to overcome challenges and achieve common prosperity.”

Weather forecast: Rain is likely for Sunday

Comments Off on Weather forecast: Rain is likely for Sunday

Here’s what you need to know about the Bay area weather this weekend:

  • Sunday should be slightly cooler with higher rain chances
  • Lows in the mid 70s in northern counties, 80s around the coast

Sunday morning will be a typically humid and muggy one with lows in the mid 70s north, to around 80 near the coast. Through the early morning there will be a rather expansive area of marine showers and storms in the Gulf.

Sunday looks very similar to Saturday, but greater storm coverage is expected. A slight increase in moisture along with a weakening of the upper ridge of high pressure should allow for more expansive storm coverage. With little steering flow, storm motion should be very slow and primarily driven by outflow. Heavy rainfall will be a concern, along with frequent lightning and gusty winds.

It is likely the initial development will start around Tampa Bay with storms building southward along the sea breeze thereafter. Inland areas also will see decent storm coverage as we remain in the light southeast flow regime. This should allow the east coast sea breeze to shift westward across much of the state.

High temperatures may come in a couple of degrees cooler, with lower 90s common.

For the workweek, the winds will stay light, which will allow for a sea breeze to develop along both the west and east coast. But with a slight westerly flow, the west coast sea breeze will shift inland a bit faster. This will cause the highest chances of showers and storms to develop over the interior counties where the boundaries converge through Tuesday.

Atlas V, Navy satellite set to launch from Space Coast today

Comments Off on Atlas V, Navy satellite set to launch from Space Coast today

An Atlas V rocket with a U.S. Navy communications satellite was rolled to a launch pad Thursday at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station ahead of a scheduled this morning’s launch.

There are no technical problems or weather issues so far. The Atlas V launch window is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:14 a.m. There’s an 80 percent chance of favorable weather, according to Patrick Air Force Base officials.

  • MUOS-5 satellite part of military communications network
  • Rocket launch window opens at 10:30 a.m. today

The MUOS-5 satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, is the final piece of a network of satellites designed to improve internet, voice and data services to U.S. military forces that are 10 times more advanced than the previous system. The five MUOS satellites will network with four operational relay ground stations, providing near-global coverage.

One thing to look out for on this Atlas V launch: five solid rocket boosters providing an 1.5 million pounds of thrust. It’s a clear day, so the SRB separation should be easily seen from Central Florida.

Join News 13 for a live chat on the launch, starting at 10 a.m.

The Space Coast launch is one of two launches in the U.S. on Friday. College students hope to launch their experiments on a suborbital flight from a NASA facility in Virginia. That four-hour launch window opens at 6 a.m.

Pound hits 31-year low as leave side takes lead in EU vote

Comments Off on Pound hits 31-year low as leave side takes lead in EU vote

(AP) The pound slumped to its lowest in more than three decades on Friday as results on Britain’s vote on European Union membership give the “leave” side a small but growing lead.

The currency tumbled to as low as $ 1.3460 on Friday, which was its lowest level in 31 years.

It fell about 10 percent from the 2016 high of $ 1.50 hit just hours earlier.

Uncertainty over the vote’s outcome has kept world currency markets on edge.

The yen, meanwhile, strengthened as investors sought safety in the currency, which is considered a haven.

Comments Off on City starts clearing ‘Jungle Man’s’ front yard

The city began clearing 38 years’ worth of palm trees, bushes, cactus and flowers from a Clearwater front yard.

Jon Daniels, 77, who lives at 1437 Carlos Ave., was cited for violations for right-of-way overgrowth.

The only part of the driveway that had been visible was a narrow path to the front door. The home was almost completely obscured from the road.

Most neighbors said they didn’t mind Daniels’ yard but the city looked into it after receiving an anonymous complaint in February.

A friend of the so-called ‘Jungle Man’ said he’s very upset by the removal of his plants.

77-year-old passenger critically injured in Oldsmar crash

Comments Off on 77-year-old passenger critically injured in Oldsmar crash

A 77-year-old man was critically injured in a crash in Oldsmar Wednesday, according to Pinellas County deputies.

  • J. Cleofas Vergara-Jaimes, 77, airlifted from the scene
  • Vergara-Jaimes was a passenger in one of the cars involved in the crash
  • Speed, impairment not considered factors in the crash, say deputies

Officials say the car carrying J. Cleofas Vergara-Jaimes, 77, driven at the time by Joel Vergara-Rodriguez, 48, was traveling south on Forest Lakes Boulevard just south of Tampa Road at the time of the crash. As the car, a 2002 Dodge Dakota, approached the exit to the Walgreens parking lot on Forest Lake Boulevard, it was struck by another car leaving the parking lot.

The Dakota was struck on the passenger’s side and rolled over. Vergara-Jaimes received what were originally believed to be life-threatening injuries and was airlifted from the scene for medical treatment.

Vergara-Rodriguez and the driver of the second car, Chelsea Caldwell, 18, were not injured in the collision.

Investigators say that speed and impairment do not appear to be factors in the crash.

The investigation is ongoing.

Marco Rubio expected to seek re-election to Senate seat

Comments Off on Marco Rubio expected to seek re-election to Senate seat

Former Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio is expected to announce he is running for re-election to the Senate, yielding to intense pressure from party leaders determined to keep his Florida seat in GOP hands.

Rubio was to reveal his plans later in the day Wednesday, according to a GOP official who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the official announcement.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters Wednesday that a Rubio re-election bid would be "a great outcome" that would likely mean Republicans would hang onto the seat.

McConnell had led the effort to pressure Rubio to abandon his retirement plans and run for re-election instead. Rubio had repeatedly said he planned to be a private citizen come January, and he was widely expected to enter the private sector before making another presidential bid in 2020.

But with Republicans at risk of losing their slim Senate majority in November’s elections, GOP leaders were concerned that the Republican candidates who emerged for Rubio’s seat were not up to the task of winning in a large, expensive state like Florida amid the intraparty uproar created by Donald Trump’s candidacy.

The announcement comes just days ahead of Friday’s filing deadline for his seat.

Golfer Rory McIlroy opts out of Rio Olympics over Zika concerns

Comments Off on Golfer Rory McIlroy opts out of Rio Olympics over Zika concerns

Golfer Rory McIlroy became one of the most high-profile sports stars to opt out of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of concerns about the Zika virus, saying Wednesday it is "a risk I am unwilling to take."

  • Rory McIlroy says he will not participate in Rio Olympics due to Zika virus concerns
  • McIlroy says concern for himself, girlfriend Erica Stoll
  • McIlroy latest athlete to pull out of competition in Rio

"After speaking with those closest to me, I’ve come to realize that my health and my family’s health comes before anything else," the four-time major winner said in a statement released by his management company.

The fourth-ranked McIlroy was scheduled to play for Ireland as golf makes its return to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) said it was "extremely disappointed" not to have McIlroy on its team.

"However, as we have always said, it is down to the individual and of course we respect his decision, which he has taken for personal reasons," the OCI said in a statement.

The 27-year-old McIlroy said this month that he and his fiancee, Erica Stoll, may consider starting a family "in the next couple of years."

"Even though the risk of infection from the Zika virus is considered low," McIlroy said, "it is a risk nonetheless and a risk I am unwilling to take."

Australian golfer Marc Leishman has already pulled out of the Olympic tournament, citing concerns over the health of his family because of the mosquito-borne virus which is linked to severe birth defects and possible neurological problems in adults. Leishman’s wife, Audrey, nearly died last year from toxic shock syndrome.

Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Vijay Singh have also said they won’t compete at Rio, mostly due to scheduling commitments.

Last month, 150 health experts issued an open letter to the U.N. health agency calling for the games to be delayed or relocated "in the name of public health." The agency, the World Health Organization, responded that such steps would "not significantly alter the international spread of Zika virus."

The OCI said it has been taking its lead on the Zika situation from the International Olympic Committee.

"They have provided us with every assurance and we have total confidence that the games will be safe for all athletes," the Dublin-based organization said.

McIlroy, who has won three of the four majors in golf, had been eligible to compete for either Britain or Ireland at the Olympics. He eventually chose Ireland, which he had represented throughout his amateur career and twice in the World Cup.

"I trust the Irish people will understand my decision," McIlroy said. "The unwavering support I receive every time I compete in a golf tournament at home or abroad means the world to me.

"I will continue to endeavor to make my fans and fans of golf proud with my play on the course and my actions off it."

The International Golf Federation said it was "disappointed with Rory’s decision but recognizes that some players will have to weigh personally a unique set of circumstances as they contemplate their participation in golf’s historic return to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, with the Zika virus foremost among them."

It added that "the Olympics is the world’s greatest celebration of sport and we remain excited about golf’s return after a 112-year absence."

The IGF, founded in 1958, is recognized by the IOC as the official world body for golf.

Senate rejects 4 gun control measures

Comments Off on Senate rejects 4 gun control measures

The U.S. Senate rejected four gun control measures — two sponsored by Republicans, two by Democrats — on Monday, ending another attempt to expand background checks and stop people on terror watch lists from getting guns.

Democrats forced the issue last week after a 15-hour filibuster in the Senate, but there were dim prospects that any of the amendments would pass as Democrats saw Republican compromises as little effort and refused to budge from their positions.

  • Senate voted against cloture on 4 gun measures
  • Votes come a little more than a week after terror attack at Pulse nightclub

The Democratic filibuster was in response to the Pulse nightclub attack in Orlando, and was led by Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut, who also invoked the victims of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in his home state.

Senators John Cornyn and Dianne Feinstein did attempt to find a compromise on the amendment to ban terror suspects from buying guns, but in the end both parties put forth their own versions of the amendments, which fell largely on party lines.

The measures were all proposed amendments to an appropriations bill covering the departments of Commerce and Justice. All of the amendments had to pass a cloture vote in order to pass for a final vote on the Senate. Each amendment needed 60 votes to pass.

Even if any of the amendments made it through the Senate, they had little chance of passing the U.S. House.

The amendments

Amendment by Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut that would require background checks for all gun sales (including private sales and sales online) and improve information in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Failed to pass cloture, 44-56. See how the Senators voted

Amendment by Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, that would boost funds for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System and ensure that the correct records are uploaded into the system in a timely manner. Would also clarify language surrounding mental health issues that would disqualify someone from buying a gun. Failed to pass cloture, 53-47. See how the Senators voted

Amendment by Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California that would let the government bar sales of guns and explosives to people it suspects of being terrorists. Would have affected anyone on the terrorist watch list or anyone who had been investigated in connection with terrorism over the past five years. Feinstein offered a similar amendment in December, a day after an extremist couple killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California, but the Republican-run Senate rejected the proposal on a near party-line vote. Failed to pass cloture, 47-53. See how the Senators voted

Amendment by Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas that would allow the government to delay a gun sale to a suspected terrorist for 72 hours, but require prosecutors to go to court to show probable cause to block the sale permanently. Failed to pass cloture, 53-47. See how the Senators voted

Mateen to 911 dispatcher: ‘I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings’

Comments Off on Mateen to 911 dispatcher: ‘I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings’

The gunman who killed dozens at Pulse nightclub identified himself as the shooter to a 911 dispatcher and told Orlando crisis negotiators to stop bombing Syria and Iraq, according to an excerpt of a timeline of events released Monday by the FBI.

  • FBI provides partial timeline of events the night of the Pulse shootings
  • FBI: Mateen talked to 911 dispatcher in ‘chilling, calm and deliberate manner’
  • Mateen said he wanted US to stop bombing Syria, Iraq

More than 500 interviews have been conducted, and thousands of tips have poured into the FBI’s tip line, FBI Assistant Special Agent Ron Hopper said during a news conference Monday. More than 600 pieces of evidence have been gathered and processed from the crime scene, he said.

Omar Mateen, whom law enforcement authorities have identified as the man who opened fire inside the nightclub June 12, told the 911 dispatcher that "I let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings," according to the FBI’s released excerpts.

The gunman described his actions to 911 dispatcher in a "chilling, calm and deliberate manner," the FBI said.

At about 2:35 a.m., Mateen called 911 from the club:

Dispatcher: "Emergency 911, this is being recorded."
OM: "In the name of God the Merciful, the beneficial [in Arabic]"
Dispatcher: "What?"
OM: "Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God [in Arabic]. I let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings."
Dispatcher: "What’s your name?"
OM: "My name is I pledge of allegiance to [omitted]."
Dispatcher: "OK, What’s your name?"
OM: "I pledge allegiance to [omitted] may God protect him [in Arabic], on behalf of [omitted]."
OM:"All right, where are you at?"
OM: "In Orlando."
OM: "Where in Orlando?"

In the partial transcript, the FBI said it intentionally omitted the name of the shooter and the group to whom he pledged allegiance. "Part of the redacting is meant to not give credence to individuals who have done terrorist acts in the past," Hopper said.

The FBI said the transcripts were released so the public could understand the timeline of events and "what law enforcement officers on the ground were dealing with" the night of the shooting at Pulse nightclub.

At least three crisis negotiations occurred after the 911 call, during which Mateen identified himself as an Islamic soldier and told the negotiator to tell America to stop bombing Syria and Iraq and that was why he was "out here right now," the FBI said.

"We currently have no evidence that he was directed by a foreign terrorist group but was radicalized domestically," Hopper said.

Mateen told crisis negotiators that a vehicle outside the club "has some bombs," and that he would ignite them if they "try to do anything stupid." The FBI said Monday that no explosives were found inside or outside Pulse the night of the shooting.

At about 4:21 a.m., Orlando Police officers pulled out an air conditioning unit from a window of a Pulse dressing room to let clubgoers get out, according to investigators. Orlando Police Chief John Mina said Monday that about eight people were saved through that window. As the clubgoers were being rescued, they told officers that the shooter inside said he was going to put explosive vests on people in 15 minutes.

Just after 5 a.m., OPD SWAT and Orange County Sheriff’s Office hazardous device teams set off an explosive charged to breach a wall and used an armored vehicle to try to get inside the club.

"Upon that entry of our officers, there was no other gunfire until the hostage rescue situation took place," Mina said. "During that three hours, I want to make sure everyone is clear: There was no gunfire."

"I am extremely proud of the officers, and I am very confident they saved many, many lives," he said.

Questions concerning reports of shots fired inside the bathroom, where the gunman was barricaded alongside victims, were dismissed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Also Monday, the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office said it had released Mateen’s body from the office. At the request of the FBI, no further information will be available regarding the shooter’s autopsy report, who the body was released to and when the body was released, the office said.

The FBI said it won’t release any audio of the 911 calls or calls between Mateen and the OPD negotiators. Releasing redacted and partial transcripts complies with state law, U.S. Attorney Lee Bentley said. "We are not in any way trying to hide anything," he said.

Said Hopper: "Yes, the audio is compelling, but to expose that now would be painful to exploit them in this way."

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch is scheduled to visit Orlando on Tuesday to meet with investigators. She will also be meeting with first responders, local law enforcement and victims of the attack.

Meanwhile, the neighborhood around Pulse is expected to be back open to the public "early this week," Hopper said, but "this investigation is one week and one day old, and it may last months and even years."

Orthopedic surgeon warns parents about the signs of Scoliosis

Comments Off on Orthopedic surgeon warns parents about the signs of Scoliosis

A Lakeland orthopedic surgeon is making a special effort to get the word out about scoliosis in children this month.

  • June is Scoliosis Awareness Month
  • Dr. Okafor: Too many parents unaware of warning signs

Dr. Chukwuka Okafor with the Spine Institute of Central Florida says too many parents are unaware of the warning signs of the disorder.

"The shoulders are not even, the pelvis or the hips are not even, you may notice some difference in the gap between the arms and the torso," said Dr. Okafor.

Okafor said he performed the first ever pediatric scoliosis correction in Polk County in 2010, when he worked on Stephanie Ackloo. Ackloo was 15 years old at the time, and describes her life now as "beautiful."

“I don’t have any pain," said Ackloo. "I don’t have nothing at all anymore.”

Ackloo was diagnosed with scoliosis when she was five years old. She wore a brace for much of her childhood and was unable to dance and have fun like other children.

She said another doctor told her she was destined to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.

“It was very painful. I would not be able to walk a far distance,” said Ackloo.

Then she met Dr. Okafor, who recommended surgery because her curvature was at 55 degrees. Okafor said there are several treatment options depending on how much growth the child has remaining and the angle of curvature of their spine.

However, when someone’s curvature is greater than 40 degrees, he recommends scoliosis correction surgery.

Okafor said scoliosis often runs in the family, so it wasn’t a surprise when Stephanie’s little sister, Emma Ackloo, had the disorder too. She had scoliosis correction surgery in July of 2015, and said she feels a lot better.

“It was definitely worth it because if I did not get the surgery, I’d probably be suffering right now," said Emma. "I could’ve got worse every single day to the point where I couldn’t hold it anymore."

Both sisters admit that recovering from the surgery was long and painful. But they look forward to the rest of their lives, knowing they can do anything and their spine will not hold them back.

Okafor urges parents to take their kids to the doctor’s office if they believe their children might be showing warning signs. Left untreated, he said scoliosis can get progressively worse, and down the road lead to daily disabling pain and heart and lung problems.

Organizers of the Lake Eola vigil are encouraged to bring their own candles. Signs are welcome, but organizers say those signs need to have messages of peace, love and unity, not anything political.

Red light cameras coming down in New Port Richey

Comments Off on Red light cameras coming down in New Port Richey

Another Tampa Bay city is weeding out red light cameras. The cameras have been the subject of controversy for years.

  • City of New Port Richey removing red light cameras
  • Residents say cameras has changed behavior
  • Four cameras are coming down

New Port Richey plans to remove nearly half of them Sunday at midnight.

Red light offenses and crashes at intersections is actually going down in New Port Richey. Police Chief Kim Bogart says it can be attributed to a few different factors.

“Either driver behaviors have changed or the layout of US 19 had changed enough to where I feel there isn’t a need for the cameras at those locations," said Chief Bogart.

Residents who admit they don’t like the cameras even said its changed their behavior.

“I stop for them all the time you know, you know they’re there, once you know they’re there everybody’s going to pay attention to it," said resident, Bob Simon.

Red light cameras have been up in the city for five years. The number of citations have gone down so much at some intersections, four are coming down.

“One camera was producing less than a citation a day," said Chief Bogart.

At $ 4,500 a camera a month, the city decided to ax it.

Five cameras will remain. For example, the camera at Main Street and US 19. It averaged 463 citations a month in the last year.

Even so, some residents would like to see them all taken down.

“I don’t like them because they’re an intrusion of privacy, somebody wants to get me at the red light he should be at the red light," said resident, James Agett.

The city just signed a one year contract extension with American Traffic solutions for the five cameras Chief Bogart says are doing good for the city.

Bogart added, recidivism for red light cameras within the past five years is at 10 percent.
