The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a man in northwest Lakeland.

Deputies said a man was shot and killed just after 6 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 200 block of Alderman Road.
Authorities said the victim was shot by his girlfriend’s former boyfriend as she was bringing medication to their infant son.
Deputies said the as the woman approached the front door of the home to deliver medicine, her former boyfriend exited the home with a gun.
Authorities said the armed man opened fire as the woman ran back to her vehicle. Her current boyfriend, who was sitting in the driver’s seat, was shot multiple times.
Deputies found him dead upon arrival. The child was not injured.
The armed man then went back into the home and barricaded himself inside. A while later, Polk deputies were able to convince him to exit the home and safely turn himself in.
Authorities have not released any information but family members of the victim said he was a lieutenant with Sumter County Fire Rescue.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd will hold a news conference Thursday and is expected to release more details.
