A Springtime Glow: 6 Ways to Purify Your Skin

(BPT) – You’ve heard of detox diets and ridding your body of toxins, but did you know the same is possible for your skin? Environmental toxins and pollutants not only cause breakouts, but also bring out a dull, less vibrant looking complexion.

“Stressors from your environment and lifestyle can cause redness, irritations and premature aging,” says Claire Larsen, skin category manager for LifeSpa at Life Time Fitness. “Proper skincare goes beyond simply washing your face before you go to bed. Detoxing your skin can help prevent oily and itchy skin, and even age spots and wrinkles.”

Larsen offers her expert tips for detoxifying your skin and flaunting a natural glow year round:

1. Cut out acne causing foods.

Often, what you eat will show up on your face and body. Forehead breakouts are usually due to eating foods your body has trouble breaking down, like refined sugars, carbs, wheat and dairy. Between the brow breakouts are linked to the liver, so try cutting down on alcohol and fatty foods, and adding in liver supporting herbs such as dandelion root, milk thistle seed or yellow dock root. No matter what you do, always be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

2. Identify hormone imbalances.

Track the timing, location, shape, size and sensation of your breakouts. Hormonal acne tends to flare up at predictable times and is likely located beneath the cheekbones and along the jaw line. It’s also typically deep, cystic and sensitive. Talk to your dermatologist or health care provider if you think you might have hormonal related breakouts.

3. Notice how your routine affects your skin.

Are you noticing temple breakouts? It could be from the products in your hair. Make sure you’re thoroughly cleansing your face each morning and night, making sure to concentrate on your hair line. It’s also important to regularly change your sheets and pillowcases. Studies show you should wash your bedding once every week.

4. Use detoxifying products.

Serums with vitamins C and E, like Vivierskin® CE Peptides Serum, help to neutralize free radicals before they can damage the collagen and elastin in your skin. Products with antioxidants will fight against the toxins and pollutants your skin faces every day. Additionally, a detoxing bath containing Epsom salt, like mio’s Liquid Yoga Bath Soak, will help to clean out your pores.

5. Try a skin detox treatment.

When your skin feels like it needs some extra TLC, head to the spa for a HydraFacialMD®. LifeSpa’s HydraFacial service deep cleans with vortex extractions and a mild chemical peel while also infusing lots of hydration. A lymphatic drainage can be added for a special focus on detoxification and an LED light treatment can also help with the clarity and smoothness of your skin.

6. Get your sweat on.

When you get your heart beating and your skin sweating, it’s easier for your body to release toxins. Try to work up a sweat at least three days a week. You could even consider trying out a hot yoga class or heated spa session to encourage the sweat beads to fall.

If you notice a problem with your skin, a detox may be just the solution you’ve been searching for. Try these tips to purify your skin so you can radiate confidence, or book an appointment online or at your local LifeSpa, the nation’s largest spa operator, for a personalized skin analysis with a certified esthetician.

USF study: Not following career calling can lead to health consequences

Comments Off on USF study: Not following career calling can lead to health consequences

University of South Florida researcher Michele Gazic’s recent study on careers and personal health is generating buzz.

  • Study finds those who don’t follow calling reported higher levels of physical, mental health issues
  • Also finds those who haven’t found a calling fared as well as those following a calling
  • Researcher offered coping mechanisms for those who are currently unable to pursue calling

Specifically, her study examines the life, job, and health-related experiences of those who pursue their occupational calling. She also examined the lives of those who haven’t yet discovered their calling.

Gazica’s study was published in the Journal of Vocational Behavior.

“Literature today shows that people with a calling have better outcomes, such as work well-being, as well as physical and mental well-being. There was no study to see what happens when people can’t pursue their calling, so that’s why I thought it was needed, “ explained Gazica.

A total of 378 professors nationwide completed the online survey. Gazica asked them questions about their health and well-being. She looked at those who had a calling and were following it, those who had a calling and didn’t go after it, and those who didn’t have a calling at all.

“We found that, as expected, those who were pursuing their calling did have better work outcomes,” Gazica reported. “They were more engaged, more involved, and less likely to leave their jobs. Those who had no calling to a particular occupation at all fared just as well as those who had an answered calling. So they didn’t have any type of physical or mental health detriments that differed from those with answered callings."

Gazica said those who had a calling but weren’t pursuing it experienced some serious side effects.

“Higher levels of fatigue, back aches, stomach pains. When we’re talking about mental well-being, we’re talking about depression, anxiety, and irritation. So those who had a calling and couldn’t pursue it reported higher levels of those symptoms,” Gazica said.

Gazica understands not everyone can quit their job. She offered coping mechanisms.

“You might be able to pursue your calling outside of work, leisure activities, volunteer work, as well as what we call job crafting, which is bringing parts of your calling into your current job.”

Gazica hopes people will pay attention to this study and develop the courage to stop settling and instead, go after their dreams.

Next, Gazica plans to examine how people develop a calling over time.

6 Health Symptoms Men Shouldn’t Ignore

Comments Off on 6 Health Symptoms Men Shouldn’t Ignore

Men's Health advice in Tampa Bay Metro

38% of men visit the doctor only when extremely sick. But just because you feel healthy doesn’t mean you are healthy.

“See your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms and put you, and your family’s mind, at rest,” recommends Dr. Mark Swierzewski, Medical Director of Florida Hospital Carrollwood Men’s Health Services.

1. Chest pain could mean a heart attack, but it could also signal pneumonia, acid reflux, or a pulmonary embolism.

2. Blood in your urine could be prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate but could also signal bladder or kidney stones.

3. Shortness of breath could mean a heart attack, or it could be COPD, lung cancer, or pulmonary hypertension.

4. 70% of erectile dysfunction cases are caused by another condition, like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, kidney disease, neurologic or vascular disease.

5. Excessive thirst is often the first sign of diabetes but could also indicate a severe infection, a failure of the heart, liver, or kidneys.

6. Continual memory loss could signal Alzheimer’s disease, brain tumors, encephalitis, or stroke.
