Tropisueno serves delicious tacos that bring back powerful memories in San Francisco

The last time I was at Tropisueno at 75 Yerba Buena Lane it was years ago for a party on Cinco de Mayo. My cousin once worked there as a bartender so she had mentioned it after another plan went bust. When we arrived back then there was a live band, DJ, and shots flowing. The tacos were what I remembered the most though.

In between margaritas and tequila/mezcal shots, I was buying carne asada tacos to attempt to keep an incoming hangover at bay (it didn’t work). The flavor of the carne asada stayed with me over the years and I wondered how they were doing at Tropisueno.

I stopped by recently for tacos and found the place moderately busy. I grabbed a table at their outdoor courtyard which has tall glass windows, perfect for shielding you from the cold wind that blows in the evenings.

Tropisueno is much fancier than the taquerias I normally frequent in the Mission District, to me each place has its own appeal for different reasons.

The waiter was new and in-training, but there was no noticeable change in the quality of the food or experience. One of the things I find most fascinating about dining in San Francisco after this return is how good the food still is in San Francisco, despite literally everything working against the dining scene here and that is why I believe San Francisco will rise again as a food destination.

Shutdowns, bar closures, a lack of tourists, the exodus of Silicon Valley, confusing government regulations, and a surging Delta variant have not stopped the restaurants in San Francisco from serving some of the best food I’ve ever had. It tastes almost like a pandemic never happened, but if you look around, the places feel emptier and the business is most certainly slower than it has been in for a long time.

I ordered a plate of tacos with rice and beans. The order comes with chips and salsa, three different sauces to be precise. Each one is enjoyable in its own way, I personally don’t have a preference. The rice and beans are cooked to perfection, moist and soft with each bite.

I enjoyed a Cena Del Oso margarita cocktail made with El jimador, Drambuie, cassis, and fresh lime juice rimmed with smoked salt. It hit the spot and created an instant buzz that was just right for 5 p.m. and a day running around the city for work.

Of the taco choices I ordered Carnitas and Carne Asada. Both were delicious in their own right and stacked to perfection, but I leaned toward the Carne Asada.

It was partially the exquisite taste of the meat in my mouth, each bite a savory bit of juiciness as I chomped through and in the back of my mind a time before the pandemic where I danced the night away with my cousin while sipping margaritas when the city was fully alive and not battling a plague.

Excellence Riviera Cancun Dining

Excellence Riviera Cancun and Finest Playa Mujeres

By Ronda M. Parag

The direct flight into Cancun from Orlando International Airport makes sense when trying to get to Mexico from Tampa. The hour and twenty minute drive to Orlando is well worth not having to change planes to get to the tropical paradise of Riviera Maya, located between Playa del Carmen and Cancun. The crystal blue waters and sugar white sands are calling. We left on the Jet Blue 8 a.m. flight and by just after 10 a.m., we were headed to the luxury Excellence Riviera Cancun. Arrange for a car service in advance, for the 30 minute ride to the all-adult, all-inclusive luxury resort. For families with children, the Finest Playa Mujeres will certainly delight and is a 20 minute ride from the airport.

Excellence Riviera Cancun
Upon entering the gated resort, the friendly staff welcomes guests with a cold cloth and a cocktail to soothe the weary travelers. The all-suite property has a variety of views and oversized floor plans. All the rooms have a mini-refrigerator and stocked liquor that is replenished daily. Room service is available 24-7. For an even greater luxury experience, guests can upgrade to The Excellence Club. Perks include private check-in, welcome flowers and newspaper, Private Club beach and lounge area, buffet and cocktails in a private bar and one Aqua Wellness treatment per day.

Relax with a cocktail at one of the six sparkling pools on the property. A friendly bartender will gladly serve a frozen margarita or piña colada at the swim up bar. Some of the pools are more secluded, while the main pool offers  plenty of activities including water aerobics or a Zumba lesson. Couples all around are celebrating romance with either a honeymoon or anniversary. Special touches such as door sashes with an Anniversary or Just Married sash are placed across the room doors. The property is a place where guests return year after year.

Choose from nine international restaurants including Mexican, Indian, Spanish, Italian and French, which are as authentic as possible with delicious cuisine. No reservations are needed, it is first come, first serve. At the Mexican restaurant, Agave, a roving Mariachi band and singer kept us entertained. The evening dinner was capped off by the server creating a delicious show of flaming Mexican coffee. Entertainment is planned nightly, or simply enjoy drinks at one of the 11 bars. With Excellence all-inclusive resort, guests will have plenty of choices and best of all, eat and drink as much as you want. There is even a restaurant that specializes in steak and lobster.

Experience pure relaxation at Mille, The Spa. The tranquil setting of the open air lobby is nestled among lush landscaping and the Aqua Wellness hydrotherapy circuit. The healing power of waters and varying temperatures and pressures are designed to create an inner peace; believe me it works. The neck jets, stone walks, ice room, cold plunge and warm pools, seek to bring the body back into balance. Salon and other spa services including massage and facials are available.
