Surf & Turf Truck serving great seafood at Armature Works

Comments Off on Surf & Turf Truck serving great seafood at Armature Works

Surf & Turf Truck and I go back a few years. We met during a food truck rally blitz in Seminole Heights and Ybor City. Always friendly at the register and humble about their food and vision.

I met the owner of Empamamas, Stephanie Swanz, at Surf & Turf Truck when she was working their front window while her food truck was being finished up. She perfectly matched their chill and friendly attitude – something not to be missed in a business where most of your business is done at an ordering station.

Surf & Turf always came ready to serve and would knock out order after order at each event they were at. The truck remained creative with themed events, while also serving seafood staples on the regular.

Now they have landed at the new Armature Works building as a vendor in the Heights Public Market. This lucky break came through their network of business contacts. I am sure the owners of Armature are pleased with what they found at Surf & Turf. As a vendor they are a great contrast from the other options at the market.

Lobster Roll

Genuinely good seafood in Tampa is harder to find than one would think. Way too many places stick to just grouper and tilapia and charge too much. There are only a few places that you can enjoy seafood in a casual setting. Surf & Turf took risks on lobster rolls before it was hip in Tampa. During my chat with the owner, Adam, I took a look at some other menu items including the Blue Crab Roll and Salmon Burger.

Blue Crab Roll at Surf & Turf

The Blue Crab Roll is at a much friendlier price point than the Lobster Roll at $ 12 and still packs tons of flavor. I have to say that for a small amount of time restaurants in Tampa were throwing Old Bay seasoning on everything and doing it incorrectly (much to my disappointment), however the Old Bay Mayo in this blue crab roll is superb. The bread is perfectly done as well. Is there anything better than a delicious sandwich? I think not. A scrumptious side of brussel sprouts completes the order.

Salmon Burger sample

Surf & Turf’s Salmon Burger also did not disappoint and left me licking my fingers in joy. Quite buyer friendly at $ 8 – this burger is both filling and delicious inside and on the healthier side. I would order this Salmon Burger any day of the week and it was indeed sold out that day after customers gravitated to it.

Surf & Turf is on The Daily Meal’s Top 101 Food Trucks for 2016 at #42 and it deserves more recognition in Tampa. It is great to see gourmet food trucks on the move in our city. You can now visit Surf & Turf daily at Armature Works for the time being and I highly recommend heading over and giving them a try.

USF Homecoming XX Food Truck Rally

Comments Off on USF Homecoming XX Food Truck Rally

Full disclosure: This is a sponsored post for Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally. I have been compensated for my time and writing. Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally works with more than 100 food trucks and books them for events, corporate and private catering, among other services. Opinions posted are my own and do not represent the views of Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally or businesses listed.

On Friday I visited the University of South Florida Sun Dome for a food truck rally for USF Homecoming XX. Food trucks were spread around the event including Boom Boom BoxChurroland TampaJust Smokin BBQ, Kebablicious, SantoriniSawadee Thai Food, and WING BOX. Homecoming is one of USF’s longest traditions, dating back to 1964, the year after USF’s first graduating class.

Boom Boom Burger

First we stopped at Boom Boom Box food truck. It was hard to decide what to order – but their Boom Boom Burger looked appetizing so we decided to order it. Indeed, it was an extremely delicious burger down to the last bite and a large portion that would be filling for hungry food truck rally attendees. The sauce really makes this burger and definitely makes me want to try the other things on the menu that utilize it. The fries were also great.

Sawadee Thai Food Truck

Next we stopped at Sawadee Thai Food Truck, not to be confused with Sawatdee Thai Cuisine located on 56th Street by USF. I wasn’t really sure what to expect out of a Thai food truck – but we decided that a Pad Thai would be a quick way to judge whether the food was good at Sawadee.

Chicken Pad Thai

I was surprised with both the portion size and dedication to quality on Sawadee Thai Food Truck. It tasted just as good as a Pad Thai you can get in a Thai restaurant and the price was fair at around $ 7. The attention to detail was there and the owners at the food truck were really friendly and remembered a friend of mine who visited the truck over a year ago.

Noodles

One of the last things I tried was the noodles off the Sawadee Thai Food Truck. Also delicious and clear dedication to authentic cuisine. I’d definitely go back to this truck and try some other more exotic things in the future – they had quite a few choices and the prices were definitely inviting.

Overall, we had a blast wandering around the food truck rally trying different food at the rally and the weather was favorable thanks to Hurricane Matthew bringing in a cold front and lots of windy weather which is welcome after an extremely hot summer. This concluded our visit to the USF Homecoming XX Food Truck Rally.

How to book a food truck in Tampa Bay

Comments Off on How to book a food truck in Tampa Bay

Full disclosure: This is a sponsored post for Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally. I have been compensated for my time and writing. Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally works with more than 100 food trucks and books them for events, corporate and private catering, among other things.

Since the food truck industry began in Tampa Bay back in 2011 – many people have wondered how to book a food truck. Booking food trucks can be more complicated then it seems and understanding the logistics behind it can be an issue without the right approach. It’s important to understand how to both get your needs satisfied and those of the small business food truck owner to ensure success.

Food Trucks

There are many ways to go about booking a food truck and one way is to work with a company such as Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally to help facilitate communicating and booking a food truck for your corporate event, employee appreciation, office parties, public or private functions. Some businesses and entities that Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally does business with include Florida Hospital, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tech Data, USF, and Verizon Wireless.

Here are some questions to consider when planning to book a food truck:

  • How many people are attending your event or function? Attendance will help decide how many trucks are needed and what kind of food truck will be possible for your event. Remember – food trucks are small businesses and need a certain amount of business to be sustainable.
  • When is your event occurring? It’s better to book earlier rather than later to increase your chances of getting the food truck you want. Many food trucks are booked at least a month out but sometimes even further – so make plans to book early.
  • What is your budget? You need to have an idea of how much money you are willing to spend when booking a food truck. Food truck owners have employees, food costs, and maintenance costs to consider. Booking a food truck also takes resources and time so consider that as well when planning a budget for your event or function.
  • What kind of food do you want at your event or function? Tampa Bay has a wide-range of food trucks with over 100 food trucks serving the city. Here are just a few off the top of my head: BBQ (many different styles to choose from), dessert (cupcakes, cakes, cookies, ice cream, etc.), Latin American cuisines (Venezuelan, Mexican, Cuban, etc.), burger concepts (gourmet, sliders, etc.), grilled cheese, and more so it’s important for you to have an idea of what kind of food you want at your function or event. Most likely there is a concept that fits your needs.
  • Do you need to book food trucks regularly? Some businesses or groups need food trucks to visit their office or business regularly. You can hire a company like Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally to handle the booking and facilitation for you. Fill out the form on their website for more information on costs and logistics.
  • Other things to consider: Do you need live music or a dance floor for your event? Depending on your needs – Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally may be able to help.
