Opening in less than a week, METRO got the chance to see the stunning new hotel that is part of the transformation of Clearwater Beach. Announced today by TripAdvisor, Clearwater Beach was No. 1 in its annual list of the 25 Best Beaches in America. While the artwork and finishing touches are being completed in the lobby of Opal Sands, the 230 guest rooms and suites are receiving their final inspections. The 15-story hotel offers spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico from every room with sunsets daily.

Today, we watched as Gulf Spirt, the mammoth Florida grouper sculpture was being delivered for installation above the entrance to the restaurant, Sea-Guini. The 9.5 foot metal sculpture is a multi-dimensional fish with in a fish and created by Carrie Jadus, Mark Aeling and Christopher Still. “Artwork that will sing about Clearwater Beach and have integrity about the area will be displayed throughout the hotel,” said artist Christopher Still. Other artists include Duncan McClellan, Mariel Bass and Arnold Ruiz.
