Emily Broere, 16, has been dealing with a non-healing wound after a cyst was removed from her lower back.
“When a kid falls what do you want to do?” she asked. “Pick them up and put a band aid on them. But you can’t pick me up and put a band aid on me."
She’s had a dozen surgeries in three years. Basically, she says, her life is on hold.
“I couldn’t go to the prom," said Emily. "I can’t go to homecoming. I can’t go to football games. I can’t go to parties. It hurts to go out to the grocery store."
Emily actually had her junior prom in the hospital where she spends a lot of time.
“Everyone knows my name in the operating room," she said.
Emily is keeping up with her school work at home. She says it helps her stay positive. Her mother, Lisa, is trying to stay positive too, even though the family is having a hard time financially.
“She is the strongest kid I know," Lisa said.
“You kind of just have to push through it,” Emily said.
Emily plans to go to college and study to be a surgeon.
A GoFundMe account has been set up for Emily.
