St. Pete Fire Rescue reports an underground transformer started smoking and exploded in the area of Third Street and Central Avenue.
There are no reported injuries, but power is out in the downtown area.
Duke Energy is working to get the power restored, but the utility company says power may be out for 24 hours.
The area affected is Central Avenue to 1st Avenue, North and 3rd Street North east to 2nd Street.
